tl;dr: Get an official PSU! (Not a guaranteed fix, but the most economical next diagnostic step.)
It's much easier to troubleshoot when you eliminate the possible (regularly proven) weak points. Cutting and splicing cables adds more weak points, instead of removing them.
Even a "proper multimeter" will not usually capture fast peaks. An oscilloscope would be one solution (voltage only, unless you have a current probe). You are out of the range of most amateur/homebrew measuring equipment here.I am using a cheap USB inline meter, and yes it well might be that it doesn't show me the fast peaks. I'll see if I can use a proper multimeter, though I don't have an oscilloscope
