Never heard the the term before but knew about auto crossover. Crossover cables date from back when clay tablets were replaced by scratching on slate.
There are some of us here that were there when Ethernet was invented. I remember having to explain to customers the concept collision detection (CSMA/CD). Today you don't even here it mentioned. Ethernet is totally accepted.

My first self-learning networking course in the '80's involved connecting two PC's together with an Ethernet cable. Back then we had to use a cross-over cable. I haven't had to keep up with Ethernet technology so had no idea about auto-MDIX but did acknowledge it was a cool idea.

At least you weren't dealing with co-ax. First place I worked with ethernet used that. Lots of fun trying to find out which of the T pieces, link cables between machines, or terminators had become flaky. On the other hand, you didn't need a crosover cable with co-ax.
