Is this a contest for the worst advice ?
I don't consider that hack to be bad advice. It can work a treat so long as a good enough contact is achieved between pin and PTH pad. It's merely doing the job of pushing the pin against the PTH pad without having to physically do that yourself. Arguably doing a better job because it should push along the entire length of the PTH pad, give better contact.

Hammering a shim in to make a pin or peg better fit or be more secure in a hole is a tried and tested method. My swivel armchairs were a lot more wobbly before I did that.
I am talking from hands-on experience with proper equipment, not from "hackaday knowledge". And I've tried such methods, besides they are unreliable, they are also dangerous: wearing/deforming/destroying the pads, risking short-circuits, flying live wires touching and sparking...
