Haha, yep, that's it! I thought I had figured out the way to do it, but no...
With either of the fans I have on a Pi, the cable won't fit the way it's intended to on the Pi side of things, and the expansion board only lets the cable plug in one way. I suspect when i was hooking directly to the Pi I must not have had the wires connected well enough, but it's up and running now. Thanks!
