I am using a Pi3B with a older USB3 HDD tray solar powered with 12V as base. Added a 12->5 DC/DC module to get 5V for the Pi. The USB3 tray at least does not wrap at 2TiB or so, maybe at 8TiB. Those USB3 SATA chips and/or modules can be drama, so I bought alternative SBC to drive NMMe and HDD (SATA on chip and M.2 on board. Only needs generic 12V PSU brick and an old 12V car battery as UPS. 5V is taken from SBC GPIO as its USB-C power in can be 9-20V so from the base 12V. I keep wire colors but removed molex connectors (solder connection). See https://forums.raspberrypi.com/viewtopi ... 6#p2299669
