Maybe OP is looking for the -N (capital N) option to ssh. This allows you to run ssh in a mode setup for just making redirections (-R and -L thingies) without running a remote command or shell.t sounds like you havent specified what to run on the remote machine
so it just spawns a bash prompt on the remote machine, which terminates when stdin EOF's
